We are Nisg̱a’a, people of the Nass River. We have lived here, on British Columbia’s northwest coast, since before recorded time — long enough to see our culture thrive, adapt, and endure. Ours is a world of teeming inlets, dense forests, and sleeping volcanoes. It is a land that is as much a part of us as our own flesh and blood. Flowing through this land and our lives is Lisims, or “the Nass River” as it has become known in modern times. The resources of the Nass Valley have sustained our people for millennia. This bounty allowed us to develop one of the most unique and sophisticated cultures in North America.
Nisg̱a’a people have a rich oral tradition that includes stories and legends that explain the relationship between humans and the natural environment. We have a deep respect for the land and its resources, and believe that we have a responsibility to care for and protect it for future generations.
Today, the Nisg̱a’a people continue to work to protect and preserve our land and resources, while also embracing modern developments and opportunities for the well-being of all Nisg̱a’a citizens.
The Nisg̱a’a—People of the Nass River—have occupied and thrived in British Columbia’s Nass Valley since before recorded time. Having successfully negotiated British Columbia’s first modern treaty in 1998, Nisg̱a’a is a self-governing Nation with nearly 7,000 citizens.
Residing in the Nisg̱a’a Villages of Gingolx, Laxgalts’ap, Gitwinksihlkw, Gitlaxt’aamiks (formerly New Aiyansh) and beyond the Nass Valley in Terrace, Prince Rupert/Port Edward, Greater Vancouver, and across North America, the Nisg̱a’a Nation is represented by Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government (NLG) — a modern, forward-thinking administration based on traditional culture and values. Nisg̱a’a Government, comprised of NLG, the four Nisg̱a’a Village Governments, and three Urban Locals, has the authority under its treaty to pass laws on a broad range of matters.
